For this week we had to find a picture that had a rebus in it. A rebus is the representation of words in the form of pictures or symbols, often presented as a puzzle. I found this while I was on the computer on Veteran's Day and automatically used my print key program and snapped a picture of it. Google is an awesome place to find a rebus on holidays. It makes it fun.
I found this on Veteran's Day (Nov 11th) on Google's website around 12 in the afternoon.
For this week out type journal has to do with "ligature". A ligature is a set of two or more characters that have been designed into a similar "set". I thought it was going to be hard to find an example of this, but actually you see them quite often. "ff" and"fi" are the most common ligatures our there. I found my ligature while looking through the Reading Eagle Newspaper here at home. It's from an article in the Berks and Beyond section. The title of the article is called "Pastors offer to help keep libraries open". You see the ligature with the "ff" in offer.
Well since I have not had internet at my house for the past 5 days because my household is cursed with the electronic curse and everything never likes to work, I am just getting to write this now. This past week out blog entry had to be on "Bad Typography". As I was walking around school with Janaya, I found this hanging on one of the walls in her dorm. Everytime I see something like this just made on the computer, just put together in five minutes, it makes me want to pull my hair out. It's so ugly! Like, it would be better if they didn't use that font. We see this all over campus. I think KU should have a group of students that make up the posters for everyone around school!
For this week in Typography, our task was to find a typeface that looked older. It could have either been from the Medieval times or it could have looked like a font that was from the 60's or 70's. In two weeks my neighborhood is putting on a yard sale so we have boxes upon boxes laying around and I found this old book that my sister's piano teacher gave her. The book is called Handel which is by M.T. Anderson and Kevin Hawkes. Inside the main cover of the book, it shows font that looks like it would be from the 1700 or 1800's. Also, I found my old Audrey Hepburn collector's Barbie which shows the old 50's typeface. I absolutely love this one because the old retro fonts are coming back into style. I found these items at my house in Reading, PA around 8:00 at night. Here are a couple pictures of what I found.
